as deemed necessary.

The first few pages of the Report, giving a history

of the Works from there viception to the furial

settlement of the general design, need no comment

from

me.

The Surveyor General quotes from a letter of mine,

dated 27th December, 1882, in which I state the

proportion of mixture for the concrete to be to to 1, that

1

is 4. of broken stone, 2 of clean sharp sand and I

of

Portland bement, by measure, mixed dry, and wetted

by sprinkling with water.

I also desired that large blocks of stone should

not be used, and that "each layer of concrete should

be grouted as it is levelled into the work."

The pedestal, or base of the dam as executed

is a mass of concrete free from large blocks of stone,

in the proportion of 7 to 1 with an inner face, six

feet wide, of 6 to 1.
